Martina Johnson will appear before the Belgian cour d’assises to face charges of international crimes
(Geneva and Monrovia, 12 March 2026) – Today, following a closed hearing held on 12 February 2026, the judges of the chambre des mises en accusation (Kamer van inbeschuldigingstelling) of the Ghent court of appeal issued a decision officially closing the investigation phase of the case against Martina Johnson and sending her case to trial before the cour d’assises.
Martina Johnson, allegedly a former commander of Charles Taylor’s National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) during the first Liberian civil war (1989-1996), has been resident in Belgium since 2003. In 2012, following a complaint filed by several victims, an investigation was launched. Arrested in September 2014 on suspicion of war crimes and crimes against humanity, Martina Johnson is accused by Belgian prosecutors of participating directly in persecution and mass killings committed in late 1992 during Operation Octopus, an infamous military offensive waged on Liberia’s capital.
Today’s decision follows a first hearing held on 30 September 2025 before the chambre du conseil in the Ghent Court of First Instance, in which the judge ruled that the investigation conducted by the judicial authorities, ongoing since 2012, had revealed sufficient evidence against Martina Johnson to justify her possible referral to the cour d’assises.
The chambre des mises en accusation, which has sole procedural jurisdiction to officially refer cases to the cour d’assises, today confirmed that there was sufficient evidence against Martina Johnson and referred her to the Ghent Cour d’assises to stand trial.
Following today’s decision, the parties are now awaiting confirmation of the date of trial. The decision marks a key milestone in victims’ enduring quest for justice. This long-awaited decision comes 14 years after the opening of the investigation, and 34 years after Operation Octopus.

Martina Johnson zal voor een Belgische Hof van assisen verschijnen om zich te verantwoorden voor internationale misdrijven
(Genève en Monrovia, 12 maart 2026) – Vandaag hebben de rechters van de Kamer van Inbeschuldigingstelling van het Hof van Beroep te Gent, na een zitting achter gesloten deuren op 12 februari 2026, een beslissing genomen waarmee het onderzoek in de zaak Martina Johnson officieel wordt afgesloten en de inverdenkinggestelde wordt doorverwezen naar het Hof van Assisen.
Martina Johnson, voormalig commandant van Charles Taylors NPFL tijdens de eerste Liberiaanse burgeroorlog (1989-1996), woont sinds 2003 in België. In 2012 werd naar aanleiding van een klacht van verschillende slachtoffers een onderzoek geopend. Martina Johnson werd in 2014 gearresteerd op verdenking van oorlogsmisdaden en misdaden tegen de mensheid. Het Belgische openbaar ministerie beschuldigt haar van directe betrokkenheid bij vervolgingen en moordpartijen die eind 1992 plaatsvonden tijdens Operatie Octopus, een beruchte militaire aanval op de hoofdstad van Liberia.
Op 30 september 2025 vond een eerste zitting plaats voor de raadkamer van de rechtbank van eerste aanleg te Gent, waarna de rechter oordeelde dat het onderzoek dat sinds 2012 door de gerechtelijke autoriteiten werd gevoerd, voldoende bewijs tegen Martina Johnson aan het licht had gebracht om haar eventueel voor het hof van assisen te brengen.
De kamer van inbeschuldigingstelling, de enige onderzoeksgerecht die procedureel bevoegd is om een inverdenkinggestelde naar het hof van assisen te verwijzen, heeft vandaag bevestigd dat er voldoende bewijs is om Martina Johnson voor het hof van assisen van Gent te verwijzen om daar te worden veroordeeld.
Na de uitspraak van vandaag wachten de partijen nu op de startdatum van het proces. Deze langverwachte beslissing is een cruciale stap voorwaarts in de lange zoektocht naar gerechtigheid voor de slachtoffers. Ze komt 14 jaar na het begin van het onderzoek en 34 jaar na Operatie Octopus.
